The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, founded in 1925 by the American businessman and politician Simon Guggenheim and his wife, Olga, in memory of their son, who died April 26, 1922.

After the death of singer Amy Winehouse, her father, Mitch, announced plans to launch a foundation in his daughter’s name, to help others battling drug addiction. Amy died at age twenty-seven, and they launched the foundation on September 14, on what would have been her twenty-eighth birthday. The family felt that it was important to “keep her memory alive.”

In March 2011, Finlay Connor and his mother Niki were hit by a bus within yards of Woodborough Primary School, in the U.K., killing six-year old Finlay on the spot. Soon after his death, his parents set up the Finlay Foundation, which raises money for toys, play equipment, and high-visibility jackets for hospitals, hospices, and charity-funded groups. “Having the Finlay Foundation gives me a purpose and I love it when I go to give donations to places with money raised in his memory, as I feel he is right beside me and smiling. Even when he was very little he was always very generous and caring and I know he would be pleased that we are helping to make other children happy,” says Niki.8

Natalie Giorgi died in July 2013 after she took a bite of a Rice Krispies treat that she didn’t realize contained peanut butter while at Camp Sacramento, in California. The thirteen-year-old had a severe peanut allergy; about twenty minutes after eating the treat, she started vomiting, then had trouble breathing and went into cardiac arrest. Natalie was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. To honor their daughter and help bring awareness to food allergies, Louis and Joanne Giorgi created the Natalie Giorgi Sunshine Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to enlighten people about the dangers of food allergies. Natalie’s parents say they have gone through excruciating pain since her tragic death and are now working to educate other parents and children.
